Stories in the shadows: a guided walk to Ben Nevis with a difference. For many people it is all about standing on the top of the UK’s tallest mountain however, if you want to get a true feel for its character then there is no better place to be than beneath the imposing north face.

This guided walk takes you on a journey to explore the north face of Ben Nevis.

The cliffs of the North face reach over 500m tall and in their shadows is an arctic-like habitat, home to many rare plant species and fantastic geology. They are also the backdrop to a multitude of mountaineering adventures.

We will discover the vast range of stories this mountain has to tell and the science behind how it was formed and has been changed over time. For over 450,000 years this landscape has been shaped by many forces: water, weather, plants, animals and people have all played their part, creating a unique place for us to explore.

Expect to gain an understanding of the geology of the area, its place in human history and all of the elements that combine to make Ben Nevis world renowned.

The route covers around 10km of distance and 700m of ascent. It is mostly on good tracks and paths with a short section of rough moorland ground.

The journeys are guided by Anna Danby. Anna is a qualified Mountain Leader with a background in Earth and Environment Science. She has a BSC in Environmental Science, PGDIP in Outdoor Environmental and Sustainability Education and 15 years of professional experience working in Science Learning based roles.
