The high mountains of Lochaber, its beautiful Glens and its magical islands are here because they are built of rocks with a very long and special geological history. Lochaber Geopark Association is a charity organization that exists to tell their story. On our Geotours, a local expert geologist will take you to beautiful places and explain how the rocks and the landscape were shaped by continental collisions, folding that produced mountain ranges, episodes of volcanic activity and finally carved by the action of ice.
Choose from a geotour of Ardnamurchan, Glen Coe, Glen Roy, Glen Nevis or the Road to the Isles.
To book, please submit an enquiry to the Lochaber GeoCentre and we will advise availability.
Explore Lochaber Geopark with a series of Geotrail leaflets
The leaflets are best used on a car-based trip and involve six stopping places and short walks. They will help you find out more about the variety of geology in the area and see a different side to the scenery. They feature clear explanations, photos and diagrams explaining significant geological features along the route.
You’ll find these easy-to-follow Geotrail leaflets at local visitor centres and Tourist Information Centres or buy them from our online shop.
Our Visitor Centre is on High Street, Fort William, crammed with great rock and mineral specimens and fantastic information about the landscape and geology in Lochaber, with our viewing screen in the back of the centre. For children, we have puzzles, fossil dig, colouring and the brilliant new isandbox! Build volcanoes, rivers, go on a safari or make the land freeze.
