We focus especially on wildlife identification, the plastic problem, fishing gear and noise pollution, but if feasible we could do some other exciting activities like whale tagging, artistic projects… etc. It is all about getting inspired and learning from each other! Our specialist OM team is formed by whale scientists, marine biologists, expert sailors, wildlife guides and professional photographers, aiming to provide you with an experience of a lifetime.
WHALES SAILS AND SCIENCE (in partnership with North Sailing) is a citizen science guided tour dedicated to those enthusiasts that want to further their knowledge about ocean science, biology, threats and sustainability.
This tour is offered by North Sailing in cooperation with Ocean Missions (15% of the ticket price is directly contributed to Ocean Missions as a donation). The tour is every Thursday at 18:30 with a limited number of passengers (for a more personal approach). It includes whale watching, microplastic survey, traditional sailing, refreshments, suits and professional guiding from OM team, onboard the hybrid electric schooner Ópal or Schooner Hildur. By joining this tour, you are contributing to key data collection and the continuity of the "Whale exposure to plastic at the Edge of the Arctic" research project in Skjálfandi Bay.

Founded in 2019, Ocean Missions is an Icelandic NGO based at the edge of the Arctic, in Húsavík, Iceland. Our goal is to inspire people to be part of solutions through a combination of traditional sailing, education and citizen science. We began our efforts because of the deep need for more conservation and sustainable tourism in the unique and fragile Icelandic environment and the nearby Arctic regions.
We strive to educate people about the crucial importance of our oceans and engage them in the excitement and beauty of scientific research.
Besides the expeditions, we arrange annual field courses for local kids in Húsavík to increase their awareness of the value of their natural landscapes and the oceans. Further, we are conducting a study on microplastic pollution and zooplankton to investigate its potential effects on whales in Skjálfandi Bay, an important feeding ground for humpback whales and other large baleen whales. The data collection is included as part of a special citizen science day tour offered by North Sailing „Whales Sails and Science“, where people can participate actively in the research project and leave a positive footprint.
